Where There is No Vision, People Get Depressed!

Feb 20, 2021

Have we lost our vision in this pandemic mess? Do we have a direction and a purpose moving forward? I will admit, that this has been a difficult time in history for many reasons, including staying focused on our goals and our life’s mission.

I do believe we are all gifted by God with specific gifts. When we use those gifts, it brings much joy. I also believe that we are to set goals regularly in our lives. After all, life is short. We need to be propelling forward, not sitting still. We need to be making a difference in this world. So, what are you waiting on? Set some goals and start working on them.

Here are a few suggestions for setting goals:

1) WHEN SETTING GOALS, CONSIDER YOUR PERSONAL GIFTS

Many years ago, a college professor gave me a book to read. It’s called The Path: Creating Your Mission Statement for Work and for Life by Laurie Beth Jones. The best part of the book was in the back. She had listed several words and the reader was to look for words that described what brought joy and meaning to their life. The reader was to look for “actions” that they felt they were created to do. For instance, after reading the book, I determined that I was created to motivate, encourage, and compel people to make positive changes in their lives. When I do this “thing”, I walk away knowing it was what I was created and gifted to do. It lights a fire under me and brings much joy. When you set goals, think about what you are gifted to do and how you can use those gifts.

2) GET RID OF MISCONCEPTIONS

What were you taught growing up about success, money, influence, status, desiring change, etc.?

Some elderly folks in my life believe that all wealthy people are crooks. That’s how they became rich….by cheating others. I'm serious. These people never wanted to become wealthy, because they believed “honest people” were the blue-collar workers making it from paycheck to paycheck.

When I was a child, I was taught to be satisfied where I was in life. Just love God and be happy. Don’t try to change anything. Don’t dream about bigger things. Don’t become dissatisfied. Don’t reach high or outside your comfort zone.

What were you taught that may be holding you back?

My God is BIG. I was created in His image and He has such a creative mind and such a big heart. With Him by my side, I can invest my gifts and talents that He has given me and create even MORE to work with moving forward. It’s okay to dream BIG. It’s okay to set BIG goals and step outside your comfort zone. It’s okay to be wealthy. You can GIVE more if you have more.

3) HANG WITH PEOPLE THAT SPEAK LIFE INTO YOU

You know what I mean, don’t you? There are people in this world that are just encouragers and their words bring life to you. When you talk with them about your goals and your dreams, they just breathe life into your soul and your plans. They pray for you and you trust their judgment. Oh, that everyone would have at least one of these people in their life.

I have several of these people in my life. I gravitate to them. I love to be with them. When I have a new idea, I can’t wait to share it with them. We need these people in our life. Look for them. Hang with them as much as you can. Also, be that person to someone else.

They say we are the average of the 5 people with whom we spend the most time. What does that say about you?

4) CONSISTENCY IS IMPERATIVE

After you set your goals, it’s imperative that you take small steps CONSISTENTLY toward those goals. The steps can be small, but they must be consistent.

I have to write my goals daily because I get distracted easily. I also write my daily tasks down that correspond with each goal.

Once you start accomplishing your goals, you will be empowered to set more goals. It’s all about living with intention and purpose.

Even through a pandemic, we can accomplish big things and make a difference in the world in which we live. Are you with me?

Action Plan for this weekend:

Set some goals. Get a vision in your mind of what you want to accomplish. Think about what you are gifted to do, let go of misconceptions and let yourself dream big, hang with people who speak life into you, and consistently work on these goals.

I believe in you.
